Lake Arenal sits at the base of this majestic volcano and is a well known windsurfing and fishing spot. Also near Lake Arenal is a series of hot springs and thermal pools, relax and enjoy a cocktail while soaking in one of natures hot tubs. Monteverde is a popular destination; founded by the Quakers in the early 1950’s, this charming community is located near the cloud forest just southwest of Lake Arenal. Besides Lake Arenal there are also several large rivers, lakes and lagoons in the region. Cano Negro Lagoon and the Rio Frio River are in Costa Rica and they connect with Lake Nicaragua and The San Juan River in Southern Nicaragua. These waterways offer great fishing for Tarpon, Snook and Guapote and are home to a large variety of wildlife.
The Arenal and Monteverde areas offer a variety of nice hotels and restaurants that cater to travelers of all types. Both of these areas are very tourist friendly and have a wide range of activities to choose from. There are a handful of hotels and specialty lodges that operate in the more remote regions of Northern Costa Rica. There are plenty of small restaurants in the region that offer everything from gourmet meals to terrific local dishes.
